Japan is justly famous for its woodblock art, and Toyohara Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) is among the elite of that skilled group. In this scene he tells the tale of a young man kneeling in the snow before a brothel after learning of the suicide of his sister. The courtesans above look with concern on the sorrowful man. The cat above them is his sister's cat who has turned into a menacing monster.

The print is from the series Snow, Moon, Flowers, published in 1885. Framed beautifully with dark green matting and gold frame.
