Hubert Wackermann painted this moving and somber picture of an Indian chief perhaps in prayer to summon the rains, perhaps for some other reason entirely. Bedecked in a bedazzling head dress against a moody sky, the chief looks upward - possibly for the spirits, possibly for an omen for future action - the sun shining on his face. It is a somber and respectful vignette, authentic as Wackermann's paintings are.
