Audubon Print Identification Checklist

Given all of the reproductions of John James Audubon's, it is helpful to have a checklist which characterizes the print under consideration to help identify it. Often a trained collector or professional is required to make a final determination. However, this checklist may help eliminating your print as an original Havell edition specimen which itself was a reproduction of Audbon's watercolors.

We have collated information from princetonaudubonprints.com which is subject to change. We have also used information from auduboninfo.net, written by Ron Flynn, to provide additional detail.

The summary below helps consolidate the information, and to us makes the information more digestible.

A legend to the columns is as follows:
Edition – The publisher or common name of the edition

Year – the beginning year of publication. In many cases it spanned multiple years or is estimated

Format – the size of the print such as double elephant folio. Sometime we use the exact paper size

Technique – printing technique. Frequently it is offset lithography. There are several restrike editions which may look very close to the original Havell editions

Plates / Images – the number of plates of the original 435 which were published.

Publisher Annotation – An indication of whether or not the publisher included its name on the sheet to help distinguish it from someone else’s edition.
