A carved nephrite jade figure in pale green-grey celadon with russet inclusions, depicting a recumbent Foo dog with curled tail, bulging eyes, pronounced paws and fangs, while a bird perches on it’s hind parts and a snake’s elongated body follows the curve of the dog’s back, its head resting between the shoulders. Dates to Republic Period (1912 - 1948).An interesting tidbit from our appraiser:This composition may intentionally express a balanced worldview: grounded strength of the Foo dog, spiritual openness of the bird, and inner transformation of the snake, a Taoist or philosophical unity of forces.
