The 1938 Atlanta Boys' High School Yearbook Opens a Treasure of Local History
One of our dealers recently listed a 1938 Alciphronian which belonged to Edwin Kenny (1920 - 2007). Although such items are normally unremarkable, this version preserved numerous personal and impersonal documents which added richness to an otherwise mundane article.
As an example of each category, Kenny's reported card was tucked away in one of the page. But also some 1938 Decca Records flyers for current hit records were also found within.
Given this material, we decided to write an article about the school, its prominent faculty, and its students which fought World War 2, and contributed to Atlanta's extraordinary postwar growth. There are no rock stars, but many of the young men led notable, if not prominent, lives.
A couple of examples are Alex Bealer, an important author on blacksmithing, and Sidney Isenberg who became a successful doctor and literary supporter connected closely to the Atlanta History Center.
So there is more than nostalgia at work here; there is real history. We are offering for sale a copy of Bealer's book, and of course the 1938 Alciphronian which already has a sizeable amount research behind it, with considerably more to be done.
