The Albertype Company
The Albertype Company (American, 1887 - 1952) originated in Manhattan but eventually settled in Bronx in 1897. It was the successor company to Wittemann Brothers founded by Rudolph and Jabob Witterman in 1879 when it adopted the Albertype process of printing. The firm was an important publisher of event, souvenir and related ephemera, pioneering in the application of collotype and Albertype processes.
In the 1920s, the company started production of colorized postcards, many of which were hand colored, which were produced as late as the late 1940s. These high quality are coveted by collectors recognizing the uniqueness and labor intensiveness invested in the cards.
The Albertype Company was acquired in 1952, after which postcard production ceased.
