Doulton Lambeth Pottery
More properly Doulton of Lambeth Pottery (English, 1815 - 1956) was founded by 3 investors of whom John Doulton (d. 1858) was one. His son Henry (b. 1821) later established his own firm; after the departure of the last of the 3, Henry and John merged companies in 1853. The original firm produced utilititarian wares and sewage pipes.
John's firm also made sewage pipes, but during the 1860s began producing salt glazed stonwares, production of which soon burgeoned which by the late 19th C. put it at the forefront of ceramics design, winning numerous awards at exhibitions.
The fortunes of the firm declined after the early 20th C., leading to final closure after a brief attempt to revive the art pottery tradition in 1952.
