Yoshu Chikanobu - Edo, Snow on Narihira Bridge in Honjo
Framed Meiji-period Japanese color woodblock print by Yoshu Chikanobu from the Snow, Moon, Flowers series, no. 41, showing a dramatic Edo literary scene associated with Arimaya, Yokichi, and Onogawa Kisaburo.
Overview
Japanese color woodblock print by Yoshu Chikanobu (1838 - 1912), formally titled Edo, Snow on Narihira Bridge in Honjo, Courtesans of the Arimaya, Clamseller Yokichi, and Onogawa Kisaburo, No. 41, from the celebrated Snow, Moon, Flowers series. The work is a Meiji-period ukiyo-e design with the narrative density, theatrical composition, and refined decorative surface associated with late nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking. This example is presented in a gold brass frame with dark green or black matting, giving the print a finished, display-ready presence.
Dating / Background
Chikanobu was one of the important Meiji-period artists working after the classical ukiyo-e tradition had begun to transform under modern Japanese life. His Snow, Moon, Flowers series was published between 1884 and 1886 and comprised 50 single-sheet prints. No. 41 joins seasonal beauty with a darker literary episode: Yokichi comes to the Arimaya brothel after learning of his sister Otaki's death, while the upper scene refers to the revenge of the cat associated with the tragedy. The contrast between snow, architecture, figures, and supernatural narrative gives the print both visual appeal and story-driven collector interest.
Why Collect
This is a strong entry point into Meiji ukiyo-e for collectors who want more than a decorative Japanese print. Chikanobu's work bridges Edo-period subjects and Meiji-period visual culture, often combining historical memory, theater, women, legend, and literary drama. The present framed example is especially appealing because the title, series, artist, and print number are identifiable, allowing it to be collected within a known body of work rather than as an anonymous Japanese scene. The framed presentation also makes it suitable for immediate display in a study, library, gallery wall, or Asian art grouping.
